Smiles & Flowers

I don’t recall the last time I smiled as much as I did today, day one at my new job. So much so that my facial muscles began hurting and my eyes were threatening to go blood-shot! It does not help that my boss sits right next to me and every now and then, she would cast a huge smile my way which I had to return in equal magnitude. My relief came when she told me I can leave by 4.30. Phew!

It is not everyday that you find a vase of flowers at your desk, so I thought, “Why not share?” At first, I almost fished out my cell phone to capture the beautiful setup at my desk, then wisdom ruled and won. One has to show some decorum, especially when you come from “Africa” . They have not forgotten our post-election violence, it sure surfaced at lunch.

Anyway, here’s my bundle of beautiful flowers. They said I could take them home.

    Ignore my comment above.

I just wanted to ask what exactly are you doing?

    What happened to your PHD?

I will be looking at numbers all day, playing around with some programmed formulas inorder to determine the best prices to charge our customers, i.e. pricing

PhD-many things happened. first, 3 applications did not get me an admission, then I realized I did not know what to study, after which I decided I might not be ready to study, and finally I DETERMINED that I do not want to study-not in the short term atleast…

Good…smiles good…I know what you mean- it’s that maniacal grinning that happens when you first start a job and people are on their best behaviour…then by week 2, the spell is broken when someone gets on your nerves :)

Yeah, you got it! Miniacal grinning, the kind that after a while you wonder whether it’s only the teeth you are showing, or that you are indeed smiling. But they were pleasant, and sweet.

wow! that was lovely of them. Please alert me when there is another vacancy. I would like to go through such an interview and orientation process. In most Kenyan companies, it would have been a stone-face day with weird or snobbish stares to boot.
