Now we can say ‘Happy New Year’

If this BBC  piece bears any truth, we can now open the champagne to usher in the not-so-new year. I can’t believe today is the 24th of Jan. We’re nearing the end of the first month of a new year. Ordinarily, most will have by now set new resolutions/goals/targets/milestones/or whatever you call yours; even though we’ll break them in the not-so-distant-future.

I am crossing my fingers that the two (gentlemen?) will reach an amicable agreement. But on a sad note, I find it almost unforgivable, that the two have held Kenya to ransom for the past 3 weeks. It is amazing to imagine that by merely reaching an agreement, (whatever that could be), peace or justice (whatever these words mean nowadays!) can be restored in the country.

I may be miles away from Kenya, in what some may call safety, but my aging parents and parents-in-law, are in the very heart of the much talked about Riftvalley, and they bear the ‘wrong’ names. They have never benefitted from any government handouts, land or otherwise. The mere thought that they may find themselves queing up for food portions at one or another refugee camp, or worse else, has left me drained. The reason why this blog is full of not-much-else.

I am looking forward  to a new chapter in Kenya. Kofi Annan and his team will do their part, (hopefully they will succeed), but the major task of setting Kenya on the path to recovery lies with us Kenyans. There are refugees to be resettled, bodies to be buried, schools to be re-built and numerous people are emotionally in pain having experienced unmentionable anguish, first hand. There is a lot of work to be done, that should have began like yesterday.

Should I mention, that while we agonise over the rightful owner of the throne, and whose turn it is to ‘eat’, the rest of the world is gathered a stone’s throw from me. No, they are not just skiing, but also charting new frontiers for their economies and how to tackle Global warming, a looming menace! And it is good that the westerners meet and deliberate, because when their economies blosom, they might have some spare change, which we can beg in the name of foreign aid. Truth be told, they are not discussing how to bring order in Kenya. And we can’t blame them, can we?

All in all, I hereby allow myself to say to you, “Happy New Year!”
